A Viable Mission Profile Emulator for Power Modules in Modular Multilevel Converters

Abstract: Various methods have been presented in the past to emulate the electrical behavior of Modular Multilevel Converters (MMCs). To meet the demands for the reliability aspect study of MMCs, this paper proposes a minimum viable setup to emulate the thermal behavior and to investigate its feasibility for reliability testing and thermal model validation of the power modules in the MMC. The proposed mission profile emulator has three distinctive features: 1) Capable of emulating and measuring the thermal stresses of p… Show more

“…To support such a superimposed stress test, advanced mission profile emulators are necessary. For example, in [83][84][85], the emulators for motor drives and Modular Multi-level Converters (MMCs) are proposed, respectively.…”

“…In a grid or EV powertrain, it is necessary to consider the data profile for actual lifespan analysis. Previous research on inverter lifetime analysis [17][18][19][20], considers the mission profile from the collected load curve based on consumers use. The conventional reliability analysis has been done with standard drive cycle which hardly match with practical scenario.…”
