A visualization system for integrating maintainability design and evaluation at product design stage

Abstract: Thoughtful consideration of products maintenance features early in design stage can reduce or eliminate maintenance costs, reduce downtime, and improve safety. As such, the effective collaboration of product designers and maintenance technicians throughout the product design process is becoming much more important for the most advanced competitiveness. To address this need, a visualization system that enables maintainability-related technicians cooperated with product designers in a networked manufacturing env… Show more

“…It is increasingly hard to ensure the durable and stable operation of products under complex working conditions, which sets a higher request to the maintainability of product. Product design can greatly affect the entire life cycle of a product, and the maintainability of product usually has been determined approximately after the finish of design stage [5,6]. As a result, the maintainability should be fully considered in product design, and thus product maintainability design is very important and essential.…”

“…In 2004, Borro et al implemented a compelling system for maintenance verification of jet turbine engines using virtual reality and haptic controllers [209]. Peng et al implemented a system that allows product designers and maintainability technicians to collaborate and evaluate maintenance tasks in a virtual environment [210].…”

“…In other words, despite understanding the importance of such a subject, the literature provides inadequate guidance for a product development engineer towards the understanding and assertiveness demanded for delivering maintainability demands/expectations, from the conceptual phase and through to the embedding into the final product. According to Peng et al (2012), thoughtful consideration of maintenance features early in the design process may reduce or eliminate maintenance costs, promote lower downtime and improve safety aspects.…”
