A Wavelet Analysis of the Dynamic Connectedness among Oil Prices, Green Bonds, and CO2 Emissions

Abstract: Wavelet power spectrum (WPS) and wavelet coherence analyses (WCA) are used to examine the co-movements among oil prices, green bonds, and CO2 emissions on daily data from January 2014 to October 2022. The WPS results show that oil returns exhibit significant volatility at low and medium frequencies, particularly in 2014, 2019–2020, and 2022. Also, the Green Bond Index presents significant volatility at the end of 2019–2020 and the beginning of 2022 at low, medium, and high frequencies. Additionally, CO2 future… Show more

“…We applied the new implementation of the ToS algorithm (SAP) that simulates the sap process of the three (see more [17] for a deeper understanding). The ToS algorithm has been used in a wide variety of research topics such as marketing [18], entrepreneurship [19,20], education [21], psychology [22], and economics [23]. Moreover, within a year of launch, ToS had around 5000 users [24].…”

“…Meo and Abd Karim 55 work on the effect of green bonds on CO 2 emissions in ten green financing supporting countries for the period November 2008 to June 2019 applying a quantile-on-quantile regression approach and state that green bonds have a lowering effect on CO 2 emissions. Marín-Rodríguez et al 56 uncover the role of green bonds on CO 2 emissions at the global scale for the period between 01.01.2014 and 03.10.2022 and conclude that green bonds have a significant effect on CO 2 emissions, whereas the effect can be either negative or positive according to time and frequency. Similar to these studies, Wang and Zhi 44 and Li and Jia 45 reveal that green finance (i.e.…”

“…This capability facilitates the apprehension of extensive and brief-scale attributes within scrutinized series. Termed multi-resolution decomposition using wavelets, this technique allows the original signal to be separated into discrete resolution levels, each corresponding to a specific temporal scale [5]. The wavelet analysis approach was widely by different authors for a different time-frequency analysis that involved different financial assets [5,[31][32][33][34][35][36][37][38][39].…”

“…The versatility of wavelets led to their widespread use in diverse disciplines such as geophysics, medicine, statistics, economics, finance, and others. This is particularly relevant for analyzing non-stationary phenomena, where phenomena exhibit time-varying characteristics and lack a constant mean or variance [5]. Wavelets effectively handle such series by effectively capturing their dynamic nature and providing insights into the variations observed over time and the causality among a pair of considered variables.…”
