A web‐based method for rating facial attractiveness

Abstract: The Internet-based method can be an effective alternative to the traditional live focus group method of evaluating facial attractiveness. It also has five main advantages: 1) profoundly increases rater count; 2) increases rate of data accrual and analysis; 3) results are reproducible; 4) eliminates logistical and monetary obstacles; and 5) enables the experimenter to sweep broad demographics, acquire background data from raters, and locate raters with specific expertise.

“…However, there is no gold standard or standardized method, as each method has its own pros and cons (27). The Internet-based survey that was used had several advantages (23). This method increased the data collection (rater count) and rate of data accrual and analysis; the results were reproducible and logistical and monetary obstacles were eliminated.…”

“…For the present study, an internet-based method (www.surveymonkey.com) was used (23). Randomization of the pre- and post-treatment photographs was performed to prevent systematic bias.…”

“…To our knowledge, the present study is the first to identify both an ideal NTP and nasal tip rotation using a populationbased method that involves online social-network volunteers, a method validated in previous work. 9,10 In the present study we also used a novel method for assessing facial attractiveness that is an established business and marketing analytic (paired comparison analysis). 11 This method allows the researcher to convert subjective pairwise comparisons into relative quality scores or preference ranks.…”

“…It should be noted that this study focused primarily on validating this methodology in lateral morphing in hopes to create a systematic approach for future research in lateral facial quantification studies. Future studies will emulate our previous work [2,11,12,13] and will require more than 100 synthetic morphs in order to achieve profound statistical power and narrow confidence intervals.…”

“…These variances require manual registry point placement for realistic morphing outcomes, and this does require training and expertise. Prior studies in our lab utilized a trial and error approach honed over hundreds of morphing exercises to identify distinct points that are readily identifiable to produce realistic images [2,[10][11][12][13]. Similar to CAD/CAM software manual input of proper margin outlines for CERAC crowns.…”
