Designing interfaces or applications that move beyond the bounds of a single device screen enables new ways to engage with digital content. Research addressing the opportunities and challenges of interactions with multiple devices in concert is of continued focus in HCI research. To inform the future research agenda of this field, we contribute an analysis and taxonomy of a corpus of 510 papers in the crossdevice computing domain. For both new and experienced researchers in the field we provide: an overview, historic trends and unified terminology of cross-device research; discussion of major and under-explored application areas; mapping of enabling technologies; synthesis of key interaction techniques spanning across multiple devices; and review of common evaluation strategies. We close with a discussion of open issues. Our taxonomy aims to create a unified terminology and common understanding for researchers in order to facilitate and stimulate future cross-device research.

There are many task scenarios that require active engagement and analysis of video content. And many of these tasks, such as training for competitive athletics, rely on identifying, analyzing, and presenting relationships between separate videos, which is facilitated by simultaneous viewing. However, current online video interaction is designed with a focus on straightforward distribution and passive consumption of a single video only. Creating an online player that supports the playback of, and interaction with, two or more videos raises a myriad of design choices. In this paper, we contribute an exploration of the design space of multi-video interaction and present two different prototypes that can be viewed as probes into this interesting, under-served area of user experience.

As more and more tools are developed for meeting support tasks, properly using these tools to get expected results becomes too complicated for many meeting participants. To address this problem, we propose POEMS (Paper Offered Environment Management Service) that allows meeting participants to control services in a meeting environment through a digital pen and an environment photo on digital paper. Unlike state-of-the-art device control interfaces that require interaction with text commands, buttons, or other artificial symbols, our photo enabled service access is more intuitive. Compared with PC and PDA supported control, this new approach is more flexible and cheap. With this system, a meeting participant can initiate a whiteboard on a selected public display by tapping the display image in the photo, or print out a display by drawing a line from the display image to a printer image in the photo. The user can also control video or other active applications on a display by drawing a link between a printed controller and the image of the display. This paper presents the system architecture, implementation tradeoffs, and various meeting control scenarios.
