A web-based tool for adjusting costs to a specific target currency and price year

Abstract: Objective: To develop a web-based tool to automate the adjustment of estimates of costs drawn from previously published or unpublished studies to a specified target currency and price year. Methods: A web-based tool was programmed using C#, utilising GDP deflator index values and Purchasing Power Parities conversion rates produced by the International Monetary Fund and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. Results: Version 1.0 is available at http://eppi.ioe.ac.uk/costconversion/defau… Show more

“…Data extraction was conducted by AB and queries resolved through discussion with JM. All costs were converted to 2013 US dollars (US$) by applying the GDP deflator index and purchasing power parities conversion rate to compare the CEA of the included studies using CCEMG-Evidence for Policy and Practice Information and Coordinating Centre (EPPI-Centre) Cost Converter (V1.4) (Shemilt et al 2010). …”

“…3 Eczema also has a substantial cost impact on society and the individual families affected; for example, the total annual UK cost of eczema in children aged ≤ 5 years is estimated to be £70.6M (or £120.19 per child) (inflated from 1996 to 2015 price year), 45 of which 64% was accounted for by NHS health-care costs. 46 A further UK study looking at patients of all ages estimated the total annual cost of eczema for the UK to be in the order of £726.7M, of which £195.3M was incurred by the NHS, £464.1M by the patients and £67.2M by society in terms of lost working days (inflated from 1995 to 2015 price year; 45 original price year not reported but most likely to be 1995). 47 Core eczema treatment involves the regular use of emollients and topical corticosteroid creams.…”

“…To avoid double counting the bed day cost (which was included in the estimation of opportunity cost PI discussed below), we removed it from the treatment cost per case. All costs in UK 2011 prices were converted to Australian 2012-13 prices using the web tool by Shemilt et al 44 (see Table 1). The stage-specific cost per case was generated from a uniform distribution with the minimum and maximum values specified as AE10% of the average cost per stage.…”
