A whiter shade of pale: anchoring the name Paecilaema C. L. Koch, 1839 onto a neotype (Opiliones, Cosmetidae)

Abstract: The generic name Paecilaema C.L. Koch, 1839 is anchored to the nomen dubium Cosmetus u-flavum Perty, 1833, and the fixation of the latter is proposed by designating a neotype. The choice was made on a potential topotype, being a common species in metropolitan Rio de Janeiro city, SE Brazil, which has been described as new five times and is currently best known as Metavononoides bellus (Mello-Leitão, 1932). Cosmetus u-flavum has been originally included in Paecilaema along with Paecilaema limbatum Kollar in C.L… Show more

“…With the exception of a few groups (e.g., Neocynorta Roewer, 1915, Taito Kury and Barros, 2014, Rhaucus Simon, 1879, or Roquettea Mello-Leitão, 1931) most genera in the family are meaningless, being made up of artificial groupings. Paecilaema sexlineatum does not fit perfectly with the current diagnosis of the genus, as defined in Kury and Medrano (2018), and rather, some of its characteristics, such as the shape of the dorsal scutum or the long and thin legs, slightly resemble some genera such as Flirtea C.L. Koch, 1839 or Cynorta Koch, 1839.…”

“…Terminology of scutal blots (chromatic designs, Fig. 1) on the dorsal scutum follows Kury & Medrano (2018) and for the outline of the dorsal scutum. We use herein Kury & Villarreal (2015) and for the chaetotaxy of macrosetae on the ventral plate of the penis; and Kury (2016) for terminology of the microsetae.…”

“…Among laniatorean harvestmen, the Cosmetidae is the second largest family, with approximately 700 described species and has a geographic distribution that includes Mexico, Central America, South America, and many Caribbean islands (Kury, ; Kury & Medrano, ; Kury & Pinto‐da‐Rocha, ). As adults, most cosmetid harvestmen have pedipalps with flattened femora and spoon‐shaped tibiae (Kury & Pinto‐da‐Rocha, ).…”
