A low-profile planar multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna consisting of four elements with isolation improvement is proposed for 5G mm Wave (24–40) GHz applications. Each radiating element of the MIMO antenna comprises of a microstrip-fed tilted spade-shaped radiator with four asymmetrical slots and a partial ground plane. The antenna is optimized to resonate at 35 GHz covering a wide impedance bandwidth from 23.9 to 40.1 GHz. Two cross lines are then loaded between the antenna elements to improve the isolation > − 30 d B . The MIMO structure with the decoupling lines is fabricated and tested. The measured results are in good correlation with the simulated results. Other MIMO performance metrics such as the envelope correlation coeﬃcient (ECC), channel capacity loss (CCL), diversity gain (DG), and total active reflection coefficient (TARC) are examined, and the results are found to be satisfactory for the device to be used for mm-wave 5G MIMO applications. Also, the antenna’s performance metrics such as radiation efficiency, gain, and radiation patterns over the operating band are presented.

Electromagnetic (EM) simulation tools have become indispensable in the design of contemporary antennas. Still, the major setback of EM-driven design is the associated computational overhead. This is because a single full-wave simulation may take from dozens of seconds up to several hours, thus, the cost of solving design tasks that involve multiple EM analyses may turn unmanageable. This is where faster system representations (surrogates) come into play. Replacing expensive EM-based evaluations by cheap yet accurate metamodels seems to be an attractive solution. Still, in antenna design, application of surrogate models is hindered by the curse of dimensionality. A practical workaround has been offered by the recently reported reference-design-free constrained modeling techniques that restrict the metamodel domain to the parameter space region encompassing high-quality designs. Therein, the domain is established using only a handful of EM-simulations. This paper proposes a novel modeling technique, which incorporates the response feature technology into the constrained modeling framework. Our methodology allows for rendering accurate surrogates using exceptionally small training data sets, at the expense of reducing the generality of the modeling procedure to antennas that exhibit consistent shape of input characteristics. The proposed technique can be employed in other fields that employ costly simulation models (e.g., mechanical or aerospace engineering).

In this paper, two designs of ten port and fourteen port Massive Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output (MIMO) arrays are proposed for the Fifth Generation (5G) cellphone applications. A dual-band ring loop antenna is proposed to cover the LTE band 42 (3.4 -3.6 GHz), LTE band 43 (3.6 -3.8 GHz), and LTE band 46 (5.15 -5.925 GHz). The proposed arrays are designed with changing the battery position and exploiting the space to add more antennas. Also, better isolation may be achieved concerning the use of spatial diversity methods on the antenna components. To achieve higher isolation, the substrate is formed as the loop antenna elements are printed on a separated dodecagon FR4 substrate with different orientation angles. The proposed designs achieve isolation better than -26 dB. Envelope Correlation Coefficient (ECC) based on S-parameters is found to be better than 0.005 in LTE band 42/43 and 0.006 in LTE band 46. Also, the ECC is calculated based on far-field radiation patterns and is found to be less than 0.2 in LTE band 42/43 and less than 0.12 in LTE band 46. The channel capacities are attained, the 10 × 10 MIMO achieve 57.6 bps/Hz, and the 14 × 14 MIMO achieve 72 bps/Hz. Additionally, The Specific Absorption Rate (SAR), Diversity Gain (DG), and the effect of frame insertion on the proposed array are also discussed.
