Abstract: Background Methemoglobinemia is an uncommon and potentially lethal condition arising when the iron moiety of heme is oxidized from the ferrous (Fe2+) to ferric (Fe3+) state, causing a disruption of O2 binding and impairment of O2 delivery to tissue. There are two forms of methemoglobinemia: inherited and acquired.
