Ab-initio process synthesis using evolutionary programming

Abstract: Process synthesis methods enable the determination of unit operations and their interconnection into a process flowsheet, with associated design and operating parameters, and responding to given objectives. Modern methods are optimization-based, using for example Mixed Integer Non-Linear Programming (MINLP) formulation to optimize a process superstructure. Finding an adequate definition of the search space is a non-trivial problem in such approaches, especially when the number of possible combinations is high … Show more

“…Most contributions in the AI-based process design literature adopt a reward-driven methodology, where the goal is to optimize the fitness function directly in the discrete topological space Γ of process layouts (Nabil et al, 2022). As a first example, Neveux. (2018) used Evolutionary Programming to iteratively generate processes by applying mutation operators.…”

“…The ab initio process synthesis is a methodology that does not require a superstructure representation [56]. In this method, a set of available unit operations are regarded as elementary blocks from which a process flowsheet is created.…”

“…Such a solution space makes it possible to discover unexpected new alternatives that have not been predefined. In general, non-structural approaches [9][10][11][12][13][14] reduce the number of integer variables by ruling them out when representing HS types. This greatly accelerates the speed of generating new alternatives.…”
