Abstract: I n continuation of preceding investigations (KRAUEL et nl. 1982) four Candida strains from the same industrial batch reactor for fermentation of waste sulfite liquor were examined. Simultaneous as well as successive substrate metabolism and catabolite effects were observed, although using low substrate concentrations (0.15%).

The growth characteristics of two Candida strains W,, W,, have been examined on the single substrates D-ghCoSe, D-galactose, D-xylose, D-arabinose in batch culture. The importance of growth parameters pmax, K s and Y with regard to possible functions of single strains in mixed populations during degradation of mixed substrates has been discussed. KRAUEL et al. (1982) beschrieben fiir zwei Stamme von Cundida Respirationsraten und Abhausequenzen bei der Verwertung einfacher Substrate und eines Modell-Mischsubstrates der Sulfitablauge. Als weiterer Beitrag zur Charakterisierung der aus einer Mischpopulation bei der Sulfitablaugeverhefung isolierten Stamme wurden aus insgesamt 120 Wachstumskurven pmax, K, und Y ermittelt. Diese werden im Hinblick auf kooperative Leistungen und andererseits spezielle Funktionen der Einzelstamme in einer Mischpopulation erortert. Die untersuchten Candida-Stimme W, und W,, das Medium und die Anzucht der Hefen wurden von KRAUEL et al. (1982, 1984) beschrieben. Die Hauptkultur zur Ermittlung der Wachstumskurven erfolgte im Schuttelkolben unter den gleichen Bedingungen. Die Trockenmasse wurde mittels Membranfilter ( SYNPOR, Chemapol ; Durchmesser 30 mm, PorengroBe 0,3 pm) gravimetrisch bestimmt. Die Zuckerkonzentration (Glucose, Xylose, Galaktose, Arabinose) wurden mit Hilfe von Dinitrosalicylsaure nach MILLER (1959) im SPEXOL (VEB CARL ZEISS, Jena) bei 530 nm gemessen. The growth characteristics of a Candida strain (T1), a Pichia strain (T2), and of a fusion product of T2-mutants (fp-T2) have been examined in batch and continuous cultures with the single substrates xylose, acetate, glucose, mannose, and galactose or mixed substrates of them. Maximum specific growth rate (mumax), substrate saturation constant (KS), substrate inhibition (KSi), yield (Y), dilution rate (D), and the protein content of the strains have been compared. The significance of the results for the production of single cell protein is pointed out.
