Abbott‐57219[SCH‐40054]: A Novel Nasal Decongestant

Abstract

Abbott-57219, 2-(4-amino-3,5-dichlorobenzyl) imidazoline hydrochloride, has been identified in preclinical research as a novel a-adrenergic vasoconstrictor. Because of its unique interaction with the a-adrenoceptor subtypes in vitro, experiments were carried out in whole animals. Results revealed an excellent nasal decongestant activity of the compound, a low propensity for systemic absorption upon intranasal administration, and minimal topical toxicity to the mucosa. This chapter presents a comparison of Abbott-57219 with oxymetazoline, the leading nasal decongestant given by intranasal administration.
