Abdominal injuries involving bicycle handlebars in 219 children: results of 8-year follow-up

Abstract: Trend of bicycle handlebar trauma over this time period was related to the local floating population and economy. The most common abdominal organ injury was liver. Hollow organ injury required emergency exploratory laparotomy and the Roux-y anastomosis applied well in cases whose gastrointestinal tract damaged seriously. Pancreatic injury usually led to secondary pseudocyst. The percutaneous ultrasound-guided drainage of pancreatic pseudocyst was really an effective way. The trend in the amylase and lipase lev… Show more

“…14,15 Outcomes after pancreatic injury Short-term outcome Mortality depends on a number of associated factors and is rarely caused by the pancreatic injury itself. In children, the mortality is reported to be very low, 18,34 with most deaths attributed to other severe injuries of the head and chest. 15 The outcome after penetrating injuries differs between stab wounds and gunshot wounds, with stab wounds 80 having a lower risk of overall mortality (<5%) compared to gunshot wounds (>20%), 7 likely reflecting the higher velocity and energy involved with increased risk of additional vascular injures in the latter.…”

“…Meanwhile, hollow viscus traumas are less common but always require surgery, and early diagnosis is important because the morbidity and mortality rates increase proportionally with diagnostic delays. [6,9] However, pneumoperitoneum due to hollow organ injuries is sometimes difficult to detect. UAXR, US, and CT are the radiological imaging modalities used to detect bowel perforation.…”

“…[3,4,5,6,7,8] Radiological examination is important for the diagnosis of blunt intestinal perforation; however, the utility of upright abdominal X-ray radiography (UAXR) is underestimated in these traumas, and patients are typically evaluated with more advanced and costly imaging modalities, such as ultrasound (US) and computed tomography (CT). [2,3,6,9] However, traditional radiography of the abdomen remains a valuable diagnostic modality for blunt intestinal perforation. [10,11] This report aimed to demonstrate that upright abdominal radiography remains important in diagnosing handlebar abdominal trauma.…”

“…Reports indicate that 75 -100 % of pancreatic injuries in children are caused by blunt trauma to the abdomen, either due to force from a seat belt during a car accident, a fall or a bicycle handlebar injury (4,5). The pancreas is pressed against the spinal column, resulting in compression and contusion of the tissues and in some cases injury to or a tear in the pancreatic duct (Fig.…”
