Abduction in language interpretation and law making

Abstract: The complexity of any given cognitive phenomenon, such as “scientific discovery”, “technical expertise”, or “natural language understanding”, requires a multidisciplinary approach. Presents, within the framework of such an approach, some visible evidences of how these very different phenomena are closely rooted in the same highly inventive cognitive process, abduction. These evidences will be provided out of examples from both everyday language interpretation and law making expertise.

“…In the second phase, these meanings were considered through an abductive approach. An abductive approach is described as an attempt "to compare alongside…to show side by side" (Kovách & Spens, 2005) and can be viewed through intuition or as a kind of a systematized creativity to create "new" knowledge in research process (Andreewsky & Bourcier, 2000) through several cycles of interaction between researchers, theory and data using the benefits from both inductive and deductive approach (Kovách & Spens, 2005). In an inductive approach, data about the researched phenomenon guide the analysis process, while in a deductive approach, the analysis is theoretically derived (Hyde, 2000), whereas in abductive analysis, the key element is the interaction between the theory and the data to acquire new knowledge about the phenomenon.…”

“…Regarding to argumentation in deductive approach, direction is from a general law to a specific case and then to the result (Andreewsky and Bourcier, 2000, Danermark et al, 2001, Taylor et al, 2002 This research approach is a theory analyzing process to evaluate the existing theories has been developed before. Deductive approach begins with generalization to find out if the theory employ to particular cases.…”

“…Deductive approach begins with generalization to find out if the theory employ to particular cases. Deductive approach browses the literatures strongly, derives some hypotheses and propositions, empirically assess them and finally conclude it according to the result Spens, 2005, Arlbjørn andHalldorsson, 2002) On the other hand, inductive direction is from a certain empirical case or observations collections to a general law and then to the result (Andreewsky and Bourcier, 2000, Danermark et al, 2001, Taylor et al, 2002 This approach is a theory development process, which commences with empirical observation or facts on the particular cases to generalize a phenomenon. Hence, it is suitable to develop a new theory (Arlbjørn and Halldorsson, 2002).…”

“…The theoretical framework (not able to fully explain the empirical observations) is then newly matched or extended to provide a rational explanation for the observations (Andreewsky and Bourcier, 2000).…”
