Abnormal Atrioventricular Node Conduction and Atrioventricular Nodal Reentrant Tachycardia in Patients Older Versus Younger Than 65 Years of Age

Abstract: In patients undergoing RFCA for AVNRT at >65 years of age had a shorter history of tachycardia-related symptoms than patients with lone AVNRT. The longer AVN conduction intervals and refractory period might explain the late development of AVNRT in group 1.

“…An increase in the length of inferior AVN extensions with fibrotic changes in the transitional zone might contribute to a longer AVNERP, dual, or multiple AVN conduction patterns, and the development of AVN re-entry. 18 The morphology of the AV node changes with aging, and becomes larger with a right inferior extension from 1 year of age until 20. 19 Age-related fibrofatty tissue could cause the transitional cells to separate and result in changes in the sequence of fast and slow inputs.…”

“…Unlike malignant non-transformed cells that secrete angiogenic factors as a result of a hypoxic stimulus or cellular damage, it has been experimentally demonstrated (in vitro), in 1995, that the tumor cells secretes, besides any stimulus, a strong complex of angiogenic factors called TAFC [10]. Numerous groups of researchers have since studied this complex, in order to isolate and identificate it.…”
