Abnormal neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio in children with autism spectrum disorder and history of maternal immune activation

Pierre Ellul,
Anna Maruani,
Hugo Peyre
et al.

Abstract: Maternal immune activation (MIA), related to autoimmune/inflammatory diseases or acute infections, during the two first trimesters of pregnancy is a risk factor for autism spectrum disorders (ASD) in offspring. In mice, MIA has a long-term impact on offspring’s immune equilibrium resulting in a pro-inflammatory phenotype. We therefore hypothesized that children with ASD and a history of MIA could display a similar phenotype specifically assessed by a higher neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR). In this study, … Show more

“…High levels of NLR are strongly linked to negative outcomes, so it is advisable to consider NLR as an unfavorable prognostic factor. Aside from assessing infectious diseases in children, the NLR is also utilized to predict the prognosis of autism 23 , surgical site infection 24 , asthma diagnosis and severity 25 , 26 , and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder 27 . This study shows that NLR is strongly associated with seizure susceptibility in FC.…”

“…As for other mental disorders (which have been studied in adolescents), elevated IHRs compared with healthy controls were demonstrated in adult patients with OCD [ 62 , 63 ] and SUD [ 64 , 65 ], and in children with ASD [ 66 , 67 , 68 ]. It should be noted that the number of such studies is limited and their results are somewhat contradictory, which makes comparisons extremely difficult, especially regarding the age-specificity.…”
