“…A study of perinatal administration of BPA at low doses reported an inhibition of GABA A currents in neurons of the amygdala, causing GABAergic disinhibition and dopaminergic enhancement, leading to an abnormal cortical-amygdala synaptic transmission and plasticity, which may be responsible for the hyperactivity and attention-deficit in BPA-exposed rats [55]. Finally, a recent paper has reported sexspecific effects of long-term exposure to BPA on GABA A2 receptor levels in the hippocampus, increasing it in females and decreasing it in males.…”

“…An antisenseinduced DNMT1 knockdown blocks the L-methionine-induced downregulation of GAD67 mRNA expression (Kitamura et al, 2005). One report of our laboratory has pointed out that perinatal exposure to low-dose BPA leads to the obvious decrease of GAD67 expression in the BLA of rat offspring (Zhou et al, 2011). Based on these studies, we think that perinatal exposure of low-dose BPA results in epigenetic dysregulation of GABAergic system development in the BLA which may be the important mechanism underlying anxiety-like behaviors in BPA-exposed offspring.…”

“…Postnatal exposure to BPA has been associated with hyperactivity in male rats in animal studies (Ishido et al, 2007;Nojima et al, 2013), but there is a paucity of data regarding effects in female animals. Most animal models used only males to study BPA effects on these outcomes (Ishido et al, 2004(Ishido et al, , 2005a(Ishido et al, , 2007Masuo et al, 2004;Mizuo et al, 2004a;Zhou et al, 2011). In addition, findings regarding possible sex-specific effects of BPA on human neurodevelopment, specifically ADHD-related behaviors, have been mixed.…”
