Objective: to understand the use of time by nurse managers in psychiatry and mental health units, as they carry out their daily tasks. Methods: cross-sectional study, carried out by 48 managers from public psychiatric units and from the social sector. Data collection was made through an online questionnaire that is part of the Scale of Perception of Nurse Manager Work, including 43 items separated in five functional domains of nurse managers. The responses were in a Likert scale: does not take time, takes little time, takes some time, takes much time. Results: the activities inherent to ethical and legal professional practices and to the management of care and of human resources required more time from the manager when compared to policy interventions, and consulting and professional development. Conclusion: the managers recognize that managing time implies organization, planning work, and establishing priorities in the tasks to be developed.

Introduction:The nurse is extremely important in the urgency and emergency service through which the initial assessment is carried out in the risk classification, it requires a clinical look, logical reasoning to make quick decisions, in addition to this professional playing the role of leadership, staffing and coordination of the assistance process, with a view to greater responsibility, which ends up differing from other categories that are limited to a single type of assistance. Goal: To search for the main actions/performance of nurses denoting their effectiveness in emergency/ urgency services through a bibliographical review of Brazilian literature. Method: This is a bibliographical review, which aims to research and explain issues through scientific literature, which were selected by inclusion and exclusion criteria, in order to analyze the data, identifying the importance of their duties in the aforementioned services. Discussion: A total of 9 articles were selected that met the objective and the following themes emerged: nurses' role in the emergency service, the importance of continuing education and the working conditions of professionals in these services", which well portray the main characteristics of professionals who work in emergencies. Conclusion: Nurses carry out their activities in a climate of unpredictability and uncertainty and are able to maintain concentration and make decisions that are fundamental to care. They understand that in order to provide quality assistance, professionals must have adequate working conditions, resources and processes. It denotes the professional's ability in pandemic situations, among others, adaptation and resolution within short deadlines. For assistance with safety, continuing education is required.

Purpose This study aims to analyse the setup time management using the single-minute exchange of die (SMED) method in 24 h Emergency Care Units (ECUs). Design/methodology/approach A total of 1,098 reports in A3 form format were analysed and grouped into analysis categories to evaluate the implications of SMED in managing setup time in the 24 h ECUs. The content analysis was based on Bardin (2011). The findings were grouped into three categories. Findings The findings demonstrate the contributions of the Lean Healthcare approach in the 24 h ECUs through SMED analysis to reduce setup time in activities characterised as waste in 24 h UPAs. Research limitations/implications In this study, data were collected directly from the Good Practices Application, from a specific project conducted in ECUs, which could generate selection bias. Finally, the datas were categorised according to the categories defined a posteriori, which may lead to interpretation bias. Practical implications The implications listed from the SMED perspective for setup time management allow us to guide managers, consultants, researchers, and health professionals to provide continuous improvement in 24 h ECUs. The findings can serve as a basis for reducing configuration time in other public and private healthcare service organisations. Social implications SMED applied in 24 h ECUs makes it possible to improve emergency services provided to society and increase the capacity to care for patients and society in general. In addition, reducing costs for health service financiers, such as government and private institutions. Originality/value To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study that correlates the setup time management of the SMED method in crucial areas of 24 h ECUs, demonstrating opportunities for its application in reducing time in patient journeys. The findings show the benefits of Lean in these environments and highlight several opportunities for applying SMED to reduce setup in activities characterised as waste in 24 h UPA. SMED allows for improved operational excellence in emergency units and enables target opportunities to increase user satisfaction and service capacity.
