About Chin (Genioplasty) Surgery

Abstract: Facial harmony is the consequence of a proper balance between all facial structures. The identification and classification of morphologic characteristics that detract from facial harmony is most effectively accomplished by clinical examination. The maintenance of the ratios between the facial thirds, correct spatial bone position and soft tissues accommodation are all factors that directly contribute in a balanced facial profile. The chin, likewise, contributes significantly in facial balance, mainly in the pr… Show more

“…Recent decades have seen improvement in surgical techniques, including procedures like advancement, retraction, and adjustments for height and symmetry to modify chin contour and achieve the intended outcome. [1][2][3] Chin surgery is a topic of considerable debate, particularly regarding the choice between osteotomy and alloplastic augmentation techniques, with considerations including ease of use, predictability, minimal complications rates, and quality of outcomes. Compared to alloplastic surgeries, osteotomy-based genioplasty is more predictable and adaptable since it can address a variety of chin abnormalities and has the added benefit of being an autologous procedure.…”

“…Genioplasty is a type of orthognathic surgery that can improve functionality and cosmetics by adjusting the shape of the mental region in three dimensions. Hofer et al applied this method to cadavers for the first time, and Gillies and Millard applied it to patients using an extraoral approach [1]. Trauner operated on a patient using an intraoral approach, which they named "genioplasty" [2].…”

“…While planning orthognathic surgeries and orthodontic treatment, one should consider chin size in terms of the stability of the outcomes and the esthetic benefits for the patient. [ 1 ] Chin is morphologically divided into two regions, the dentoalveolar symphysis and basal symphysis. The dentoalveolar symphysis includes the alveolar process and lower incisors.…”

“…[ 7 ] Sagittal jaw discrepancy might be reflected in the morphology of the symphysis and help to diagnose the shape of the symphysis. [ 1 ] The purpose of the study was to evaluate symphyseal morphology in adults of different skeletal dysplasia.…”
