Abscisic Acid Treatment in Patients with Prediabetes

Abstract: Aim: to evaluate the effects of abscisic acid (ABA), contained in dwarf peaches, on the regression of impaired fasting glucose (IFG) or impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) conditions. Materials and methods: sixty-five patients with IFG or IGT were randomized to take ABA or placebo for 3 months. We evaluated: fasting plasma glucose (FPG), postprandial plasma glucose (PPG), glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), fasting plasma insulin (FPI), homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), lipid profile and high… Show more

“…Abscisic acid was determined between 56.68 and 247.63 ng ml −1 in all fruity samples. Derosa et al (2020) studied the efficacy of abscisic acid in the treatment of patients with prediabetes and obtained positive results. Quercetin is the major phenolic component of kefir samples after gallic acid and was detected only in kefir samples added with Arbutus unedo L. fruit.…”

“…Defective endogenous ABA has been observed in both T1D and T2D [ 12 , 55 ], suggesting that endogenous ABA deficiency may play a role in the pathogenesis of glucose intolerance due to insulin deficiency or resistance. Indeed, oral ABA has been shown to improve glucose tolerance in borderline and prediabetic subjects [ 56 , 57 ] and to improve insulin sensitivity in murine models of T1D [ 58 ]. From the data presented here, we hypothesize that the impaired endogenous ABA function occurring in diabetes could contribute to the reduced resilience of cardiomyocytes to the ultimate stressor of these cells, i.e., hypoxia.…”
