“…Multiple regression analyses suggest that growth is best explained by the quantity of proteins ingested than by the other variables. This is in agreement with the results of Lilly (1975) and Lowe & Lawrence (1976), who also observed that the amount of protein ingested best defines growth. Conversely, Frantzis (1992) thought that the growth of Paracentrotus lividus was best explained by the quantity of organic matter absorbed.…”

“…Although the results of the present study concern only 3 food types, the data generated seem to be more in agreement with the second theory, with an increase in ingestion rates when protein levels in the food are low (with protein levels being an indication of food quality). The same results have been obtained in other studies (Miller & Mann 1973, Lowe & Lawrence 1976, Frantzis & Grémare 1992. In the present study, it should be noted that the increase in ingestion levels (in terms of weight) observed for individuals fed vegetable food does not compensate for the low protein content of this food type.…”

“…The sea urchin L. variegatus is a generalist grazer of algae (LOWE;LAWRENCE, 1976;VADAS et al, 1982;GREENWAY, 1995;BEDDINGFIELD;MCCLINTOCK, 1999), and occasionally of animals (LOWE; LAWRENCE, 1976). For example, in central Florida this urchin can primarily consume macroflora, except in periods when abundance of algae is extremely limited (COBB; LAWRENCE, 2005).…”

“…For instance, Caulerpa spp. were avoided by the surgeonfish Zebrasoma flavescens (C. prolifera, C. racemosa, Caulerpa serrulata, C. sertularioides; Wylie and Paul, 1988) and the sea urchins Paracentrotus lividus (Caulerpa taxifolia; Lemee et al, 1996), and Lytechinus variegatus (C. prolifera, Lowe, 1974;Vadas et al, 1982). In contrast, many reef fish, including parrotfish, surgeonfish, and rabbitfish, consumed Caulerpa spp.…”

“…Ulva spp. were avoided by the sea urchins Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis (Van Alstyne and Houser, 2003), P. lividus , and L. variegatus (Lowe, 1974), the spottail pinfish Diplodus holbrooki (Hay et al, 1987a), and A. longimana (Duffy and Hay, 1994). However, Ulva spp.…”
