Absorption Enhancement in Peridinin–Chlorophyll–Protein Light-Harvesting Complexes Coupled to Semicontinuous Silver Film

Abstract: We report on experimental and theoretical studies of plasmon-induced effects in a hybrid nanostructure composed of light-harvesting complexes and metallic nanoparticles in the form of semicontinuous silver film. The results of continuous-wave and time-resolved spectroscopy indicate that absorption of the light-harvesting complexes is strongly enhanced upon coupling with the metallic film spaced by 25 nm of a dielectric silica layer. This conclusion is corroborated by modeling, which confirms the morphology of … Show more

“…In such cases the interaction between an emitter and a metallic nanostructure can be probed by monitoring decrease of donor emission intensity and shortening of its fluorescence decay. The resonant character of plasmon excitations in metallic nanostructures implies strong wavelength dependence of both metal-enhanced fluorescence and fluorescence quenching [9,11,12].…”

“…Furthermore, the apoprotein of the PCP complex can be easily reconstituted with mixtures of chlorophylls thus providing a tool to engineer the energy transfer dynamics between pigments in a well-dened protein geometry. Last but not least, the absorption of the PCP complex matches well with the plasmon frequencies of both gold and silver small spherical nanoparticles [19,20].…”

“…Enhancement of light absorption was observed for PSI attached to plasmonic nanoparticles (PNPs) [49]. The LHCs anchored on plasmonic gold or silver island substrates were able to generate 10-to 20-fold of fluorescence emission [50][51][52].…”
