Absorption of Carbon Dioxide in Two Binary Mixtures of Ionic Liquids

Abstract: Ionic liquids are the basis of a potential alternative to conventional processes based on aqueous amines currently used for carbon dioxide capture. Mixtures of ionic liquids offer an additional degree of tailoring over the intrinsic tunable properties of "single" ionic liquids, while totally maintaining the ionic liquid character. In this work, two mixtures of mutually miscible ionic liquids have been investigated, namely, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide + 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazo… Show more

“…The k H value decreased as the molar ratio of [C 2 MIM][Tf 2 N] increased, and thus the absorption capacity increased by increasing the content of the fluorinated IL. Almost the same behavior was observed for binary mixtures of imidazolium‐based ILs, such as [C 2 MIM][Tf 2 N]/[C 2 MIM][EtSO 4 ] and [C 2 MIM][Tf 2 N]/[C 4 MIM][EtSO 4 ] . The CO 2 solubility increased by increasing the content of [C 2 MIM][Tf 2 N].…”

“…Therefore, ionic liquids (ILs) catch our attention due to their unique properties, such as high thermal and chemical stability, negligible vapor pressures and high designability as a result of nearly unlimited number of possible combinations of different anion-cation pairs. [43][44][45][46][47][48][49][50] A large number of ILs have been employed for the potential absorption separation of C 2 H 2 and C 2 H 4 . Zhao et al 51 have screened a new class of tetraalkylphosphonium ILs with high capacity and selectivity (0.476 mol/mol IL, selectivity up to 21.4) via a rapid screening method based on COSMO-RS.…”

“…Moving beyond two‐ion ILs, several researchers have recently turned their attention to double salt ionic liquids (DSILs) which are composed of more than one cation and/or anion . As the most straightforward approach to obtain such DSILs is mixing two different ILs together, they are treated as “IL mixtures” in many studies (in the following all ILs refer to two‐ion ones if they are not particularly specified) .…”
