Abstract 1254: Kaposi's Sarcoma herpesvirus K1's transcellular inhibition of Fas-mediated apoptosis

Abstract: The long-term expression of human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8) K1 produces hyperplasia of lymph nodes, splenomegaly, and lymphomas in mice. The mechanism of how K1 causes hyperplasia and lymphomas is not known. K1 is known to activate Akt and nuclear factor kappa B (NF-kB) through immunoreceptor tyrosine-based activation motif (ITAM) and may also bind to Fas receptor through its immunoglobulin (Ig) chain-like domain and interfere with apoptosis.
