Abundance and Composition of Marine Litter on the Seafloor of the Gulf of Sant Jordi (Western Mediterranean Sea)

Abstract: This article analyzes the abundance and composition of marine litter in the Gulf of Sant Jordi (Catalonia, Spain). Marine litter was removed from the sea by a fishing trawler operating from the port of L’Ametlla de Mar; 56 hauls were performed between July and September 2018. The marine litter was classified following UNEP/IOC Guidelines on Survey and Monitoring of Marine Litter and EU MSFD Technical Group on Marine Litter Joint List, with a total of 2691 items collected and an average number by haul of 48 (SD… Show more

“…The Mediterranean Sea is a semi-enclosed water body where coastal regions were highly urbanized and suffer from variety of anthropogenic activities. As a result, majority of the marine litter in the Mediterranean Sea is consisting of plastics (Saladié & Bustamante, 2021). This condition increases the entanglement risk of MPs into the marine organisms.…”

“…In particular, plastics represent from 60 to 95% of the global marine litter in the oceans [9][10][11][12]; therefore, understanding the dynamics in which they originate, move, and accumulate is crucial [13]. The monitoring of plastic debris abundance in the marine environment [14][15][16] is important for assessing the potential impact of measures adopted to reduce the presence of plastic AMD. This work can be complicated by large spatial and temporal heterogeneity in the amount of plastic debris, as pointed out by Ryan et al [17].…”
