Abundance, Diversity, and Distribution of Primates at Welel Mountain, Kellem Wollega Zone, Oromia Region, Ethiopia

Abstract: Primates are the mammals of the order Primate that is characterized by advanced development of binocular vision and enlargement of the cerebral hemispheres. The aim of this study was to investigate the abundance, diversity, and distribution of primates on Welel Mountain. From August 2017 to February 2018, we collected data from different parts of Welel Mountain during wet and dry seasons of the year and analyzed them using SPSS version 20. We identified four primate species: Chlorocebus aethiops, Cercopithecus… Show more

“…Shannon-Wiener index, symbolized with H' which is given in the following formula is used to compare flora and fauna diversity respectively. In which H' stands for the diversity index and pi stands for number of individuals of species/total number of samples belonging to the ith species in the dataset (Fufa, et. al., 2020).…”

“…Ecosystems and habitats alarmingly dominated by humans, which trigger species including primates compelled to exploit new human resources to survive [8,9]. Human activities like logging, deforestation, hunting, agricultural expansion, and other such factors intensely affected primate populations [10]. Accordingly, primates and humans are always in potential con ict over crops due to primates' renowned crop raiding behavior.…”

“…It is endemic to the central and North-Western highlands of Ethiopia and is the only extant primate species of the genus Theropithecus I. Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, 1843 (Beehner et al 2007;Yazezew et al 2020). The species' geographic range is narrowly restricted to the high-elevation montane grasslands of the country (Mori and Belay 1990;Fufa et al 2020).…”

“…Many factors influence the activity budgets of primates in natural habitats, most of which are related to the challenges of acquiring food energy. Wild populations of most non-human primates are decreasing globally due to dramatic anthropogenic impacts such as logging, deforestation, hunting, and other such factors (Fufa et al 2020).…”
