“…While this variation among sites is at least partly related to differences in study procedures and sampling effort, as well as the degree of conservation of the study areas (e.g. Freitas et al, 2011;Bezerra et al, 2014;Dias et al, 2014;Deiciellos, 2016;Dias and Bocchiglieri, 2016), the SANR does appear to host a relatively rich and diversified mammalian fauna in comparison with most other sites. The new record of the rodent O. stramineus extended the distribution of the species westwards, to the western frontier of the state, adjacent to Piauí.…”

“…Corsini and Moura (2014) observed only three groups in line transects (relative abundance of 0.19 groups/10 km walked), although the auditory records were higher ( n = 13; 0.85 groups/10 km). Freitas et al (2011) had only two group sightings in 133 km of line transects. The 273 adult individuals estimated to inhabit the 221‐km 2 in our study area contrasts with a minimum population size of 260 adult individuals in 2,636 km 2 , the total occurrence area of the species (Printes et al, 2011).…”

“…It is categorized as Critically Endangered (Printes, Alonso, & Jerusalinsky, 2018; Veiga et al, 2008) by the criteria C2a(i): the population size is estimated to number fewer than 250 adult individuals, the population is experiencing a continuous decline, and no subpopulation is estimated to contain more than 50 adult individuals (IUCN, 2012). Two local population assessments based on visual surveys concluded that the species occurs in extremely low abundance (Corsini & Moura, 2014; Freitas, De‐Carvalho, & Ferrari, 2011), and Printes, Rylands, and Bicca‐Marques (2011) estimated a minimum population of 260 individuals in the species' range of 2,636 km 2 .…”

“…Although few data are available on caatinga populations of Cerdocyon thous, the species has been recorded in arboreal-shrubby caatinga, dry forest, carrasco, shrub caatinga, agricultural areas, grotas, and abandoned fields (Mares et al 1981, Monteiro Da Cruz et al 2005, Perez 2008, Freitas et al 2011, Dias et al 2014). This canid is abundant throughout its distribution (Beisiegel et al 2013) and is highly adaptable to variations in the environment (Berta 1982, Ferraz et al 2010, Beisiegel et al 2013.…”

“…It also seems to be tolerant of modified habitats, and may often use environments such as pastures and sugarcane, eucalypt, and pine plantations (e.g., Courtenay and Maffei 2004, Lyra-Jorge et al 2008, Bocchiglieri et al 2010). In the Caatinga, an endemic tropical dry forest of northeastern Brazil, which is characterised by xerophylous and deciduous vegetation types, Cerdocyon thous has been recorded in scrub, dry forest, riparian forest, and agricultural areas (Monteiro Da Cruz et al 2005, Freitas et al 2011, Dias et al 2014.…”
