Aeromonas are widely distributed in the aquatic environment, and are considered to be emerging organisms that can produce a series of virulence factors. The present study was carried out in a sanitary sewage stabilization pond treatment system, located in Lins, State of Sã o Paulo, Brazil.Most probable number was applied for estimation of the genus Aeromonas. Colony isolation was carried out on blood agar ampicillin and confirmed by biochemical characterization. Aeromonas species were isolated in 72.4% of influent samples, and in 55.2 and 48.3% of effluent from anaerobic and facultative lagoons, respectively. Thirteen Aeromonas species were isolated, representing most of the recognized species of these organisms. Even though it was possible to observe a tendency of decrease, total elimination of these organisms from the studied system was not achieved. Understanding of the pathogenic organism's dynamics in wastewater treatment systems with a reuse potential is especially important because of the risk it represents.

In this study, the sea water and sediment samples of four different locations were collected from Palk bay regions during 2014 for pollution indicators study. All the bacterial parameters were higher during the rainy season compared to summer season in all the sampling locations of the Palk bay regions. In the water samples, among the pollution indicator bacterial groups, TC and TS counts were highest 0.67 -10.3 [×10 3 ] ml −1 and 0.8 -10.8 [×10 2 ] ml −1 during monsoon, and the least 0.54 -8.5 [×10 3 ] ml −1 and 0.7 -9.0 [×10 2 ] ml −1 were noticed during summer. In monsoon sediment sample, the higher VC count was observed in Thondi (2100 g −1 ) followed by Mimisal (1700 g −1 ), Manamelkudi (960 g −1 ) and Devipattinam (200 g −1 ). The pollution index (PI) of each location was calculated and was showed a remarkable microbial contamination was observed in sediment sample than water sample. The order of PI observed were Thondi > Mimisal > Manamelkudi > Devipattinam. The highest PI ratio (15.5) was observed in Devipattinam sediment sample at monsoon season while lowest (2.5) was noticed in Devipattinam water sample at summer season. The results indicated that the coastal environment is highly exposed to human excreta that suggesting to avoid direct contact. Hence, throughout impoundment is needed to protect coastal environments.

Estuaries are hotspots of anthropogenic activities. The deposition of pathogenic bacteria in the sediment and their re-suspension into the water column are influenced by riverine discharge and tides. The abundance of Escherichia coli O157:H7, Shigella spp., Salmonella spp., total coliforms (TC) and Vibrio spp. (Vibrio cholerae (VC), Vibrio parahaemolyticus (VP), Vibrio alginolyticus (VA)) was assessed along with the total bacterial count (TBC) and total viable count (TVC) in surface sediments along the banks of the Zuari estuary, Goa, India. The study was carried out fortnightly for a period of 17 months covering three seasons, i.e. pre-monsoon (PreM), monsoon (MON) and postmonsoon (POM). The spatial and temporal changes in the quality of organic matter were also assessed. The organic matter content was high and rich in carbohydrates and proteins towards upstream sites. The quality of organic matter was influenced by the seasons. E. coli O157:H7 was detected only during MON towards the upstream stations. A negative correlation between TC and TBC with salinity was evident indicating the influence of land run-off. The Shigella spp. and VA were high towards the mouth of the estuary during PreM. However, during POM, the TVC, TC and VP were abundant towards the upstream and VC were abundant at the mouth of the estuary. Among the Vibrios, VP and VA were the most frequently occurring bacteria whereas TC and Shigella spp. were dominant among allochthonous pathogens in the sediments irrespective of space and time. In addition to influence of seasons, the sampling time influenced by tidal condition also played an important role in the population dynamics of pathogenic bacteria in the sediments. Future studies should address the interaction of pathogenic bacteria with suspended particles, their transport and survival in the sediments.
