Academic and School Health Issues Among Children Exposed to Maternal Intimate Partner Abuse

Abstract: Children's exposure to maternal IPV is significantly associated with the occurrence of academic problems and school health concerns. Describing the increased risk of the academic and health problems exhibited by IPV-exposed children relative to nonexposed children offers the possibility of improving the likelihood that clinicians will identify the woman who experienced abuse and her children, and promote referral to appropriate resources.

“…As these are the only contagious physical health problems we assessed, this finding may suggest that these preschool-aged children experience social isolation. For example, school-aged children whose mothers are exposed to IPV are more likely to have frequent absences from school, namely for suspensions due to behavioral problems than children whose mothers are not exposed to IPV (Kernic et al 2002). However, more research into the specifics of this mechanism for preschoolaged children is certainly warranted.…”

“…The literature on depression has carefully controlled for traditional socio-economic risk factors, but has paid less attention to other comorbid conditions that might be related to depression but imply different interventions. Although exposure to maternal intimate partner abuse has been shown to negatively impact children's health and school performance, it has not been independently assessed in the above studies [6]. Likewise, despite the large literature on social support, its protective mental and physical health benefits [7,8], and its direct impact on maternal depression [9], social support has not been assessed in the maternal depression/child safety studies.…”

“…[1][2][3] Studies show that intimate partner violence or abuse (IPV) affects the physical and mental health of victims [4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12] and of children who witness it. [13][14][15][16][17][18] Because IPV is commonplace and the consequences of IPV are serious, professional organizations recommend that physicians routinely screen the woman alone without her spouse or children. [19][20][21][22][23] The value of screening for IPV when effectiveness has not been proved remains subject to controversy.…”
