Academic library innovation through 3D printing services

Abstract: Purpose-One of the most innovative library services recently introduced by public and academic libraries, the technology of 3D printing, has the potential to be used in multiple educational settings. The goal of the project described in this article was to examine how this novel library digital service motivates students' learning, and to investigate managerial issues related to the introduction of 3D printing services at a medium-size urban community college library with restricted funding.

“…At the same time, several scholars have revealed 3D printing as a supportive technology during teaching to produce objects that aid learning, creating assistive technologies, and supporting outreach activities (Ford & Minshall, 2019;Kostakis et al, 2015). The use of 3D printing raises student engagement and motivation (Carpenter et al, 2016;Cook et al, 2015;Kostakis et al, 2015;Pantazis & Priavolou, 2017), as well as interest in the subject material (Letnikova & Xu, 2017). Further, 3D printing can facilitate the learning process (Berry et al, 2010;Schelly et al, 2015;Srivastava & Dey, 2018) from active student participation and through cross-curriculum student engagement that can help create a sense of empowerment (Schelly et al, 2015).…”

“…The issue of innovation in information services, especially in the context of libraries, is not very popular in comparison to other topics. However, there are some papers about this problem; the most interesting ones are “Making sure things can never be the same again: innovation in library and information services” (Baker, 2016), “Quality assured innovative and best practices in library and information services” (Rath, 2016), “Academic libraries and innovation: a literature review” (Brundy, 2015), “The library innovation toolkit: ideas, strategies, and programs” (Molaro and White, 2015) and “Academic library innovation through 3D printing services” (Letnikova and Xu, 2017). Based on THE subject literature analysis, the paper by Baker discusses the problems of different approaches to innovation that exist in the field of theory and practice of information and library science.…”

“…More importantly, as a cheap and straightforward method of 3D printing, FDM has become the most accessible 3D printing alternative for the general public (Zhang et al, 2017). Desktop FDM 3D printers have become commonplace in schools (Umekubo, 2015), libraries (Letnikova and Xu, 2017), design offices and home workshops (Wang et al, 2016). The great popularity and continued improvement and addition of materials for FDM printing, particularly those with shape memory capabilities, is the main reason for this review.…”
