Background: Quantifying and benchmarking scholarly productivity of emergency medicine faculty is challenging. While performance indicators including publication and citation counts are available, use of indicators to create normative references has lagged. The authors developed methodology to benchmark emergency medicine academician scholarly productivity (e.g., publications over time) and impact (e.g., citations per publication over time) against an appropriate reference group.Methods: The methodology includes: 1) define time frame and scholarly metrics; 2) identify representative population; 3) reconcile alternative author names; 4) use analytic tool to identify scholarly output; 5) build database containing metrics; and 6) create benchmarking statistics, including subsamples. This study included emergency medicine faculty from 2011 to 2015, with total peer-reviewed publications and citations per publication as scholarly metrics.Results: In the United States at the time of the search (2016) there were 200 academic emergency departments, 186 with public faculty listings, which yielded 6,727 academicians. For each academician, the authors calculated statistics about peer-reviewed publications and average citations per publication from 2011 to 2015 and created benchmarking rulers using percentile ranks. Productivity by year of graduation with terminal degree was compared within each subsample, finding that newly graduated faculty demonstrated higher productivity than their within-rank peers who graduated earlier. Finally, benchmarking tables were created that allow comparison of peer-reviewed publication counts and citations per publication for individual academicians against the norm.Conclusions: This benchmarking method can serve as a model for norm-based scaling of scholarly productivity for emergency medicine. Background Scholarship is an essential component of fellowship programs. Postprofessional fellowship directors are considered research mentors, but their publication records have not been documented. Objectives The primary purpose of this research was to characterize the publication records and bibliometric indices of the current postprofessional fellowship directors listed on the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP) website. A secondary purpose was to compare the publication metrics of distinct groups within this cohort. Methods Using the Web of Science database, the publication records of all listed postprofessional fellowship directors on the ACCP website were collected. Forty‐nine unique directors were identified from the website. Bibliometric indices calculated included: lifetime publications, publications/year, h‐index, m‐quotient, lifetime citations, citations/year, average citations/paper, productivity, and creativity. In addition, we compared peer reviewed fellowship directors and non‐peer‐reviewed fellowship directors, infectious disease fellowship directors, and noninfectious disease fellowship directors, and National Institutes of Health (NIH)‐funded fellowship directors and non‐NIH funded directors. The Kruskal‐Wallis analysis of variance for nonparametric data was used to assess differences between groups. The a priori level of significance was set at P < .01. Results Within our research cohort, 12 (24%) of the fellowship directors had less than 10 lifetime publications and 12 (24%) had an h‐index of less than five. Infectious disease directors had higher bibliometric indices than noninfectious disease directors (P < .01) as did NIH‐funded researchers when compared with their nonfunded counterparts (P < .01). Gender differences, secondary degrees, and peer‐review status were not significantly different between groups. Conclusion Fellowship directors should possess an established record of scholarly activity to function in the role of research mentor. Benchmarking of bibliometric indices could be an important tool in the overall evaluation of fellowship director qualifications in the future.

Background. With a long tradition and outstanding contributions over time, medical scientific research in Romania has experienced major changes in the last two decades, marked by an increase in scientific publications, originating especially from university centers and fostered by national regulations on publication standards required for professional promotion. This study is aimed at assessing the literature on surgical oncology in Romania, published by Romanian authors in journals indexed in international databases. Materials and Methods. A literature search was performed, focused on surgical oncology performed in Romania. Two databases, PubMed and Web of Science (WoS), were finally selected and included in the study, which included bibliometric parameters and subject analysis. Results. The PubMed search retrieved 464,295 articles being published in only 3 Romanian journals, Chirurgia, The Medical-Surgical Journal (Iasi), and Romanian Journal of Morphology and Embryology. The search of the Web of Science retrieved 494 records on the subject of surgical oncology in Romania, 449 of which were published after 1989. The 494 articles received 2,102 citations, 4.26 per year, and an overall Hirsch index of 21. Most articles were published in the same 3 Romanian journals as in PubMed. Neoplasms of the digestive system prevailed, followed by articles on general surgical oncology issues, cancer research, and therapy. Bucharest has the highest number of authors, followed by Cluj-Napoca and Iasi. Conclusion. Research originating from Romania in the field of surgical oncology is present and visible at an international level mainly through Romanian journals. Sustained effort is required from surgical oncology authors to be published in international journals on this subject, as it is the only way to increase global visibility and impact.

Abstract: Objective benchmarks, such as the median h-index and NIH funding, provide additional insights for both junior faculty and leadership into the productivity needed to attain promotion to the next academic rank for surgical oncologists.
