Academic Publishing and its Digital Binds: Beyond the Paywall towards Ethical Executions of Code

Abstract: In this article we explore various constraints and potentials of academic publishing in the digital age. Advancement of digital platforms and their expansive reach amplify the underlying tensions of institutional and scholarly change. A key affordance of these platforms is that of speed: rapidly distributing the outputs of a precaritised profession and responding to pressures to publish as well as the profit motive of publishers. “…Our product uses an approach popularized by digital media, whereas until now academic journals have been the dominant platform for communication in geospatial science. This has meant that a large proportion of map-based geographic science has been delivered at the scale of a printable page, at irregular intervals, and often behind paywall, which has severely limited access in the Global South and those without affiliation to research institutions 74 . Even with access to published map products there are issues with communicating fine spatial resolution imagery, as scaling a figure down for print on standard letter-size paper can result in data loss from resampling.…”

“…Academics have traditionally circulated their research through peer-reviewed journals but technology is opening up many new paths to publication and dissemination. Swist and Magee (2017) explored the constraints and potentials for academic publishing in the digital age. They discussed how the advancement of digital platforms amplifies the underlying tensions of institutional and scholarly change (Swist & Magee, 2017).…”
