Accelerated nanoparticles synthesis in alcohol–water-mixture-based solution plasma

Abstract: An extraordinary high-speed synthesis of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) was discovered by synthesizing the AuNPs in ethanol-water mixtures using a solution plasma process (SPP). The influence of the ethanol mole fraction (χethanol) in the ethanol-water mixtures on the reduction rate of gold chloride ions to AuNPs under the SPP system was studied. The results indicated that the reaction rate of the AuNPs synthesis exhibited a maximum value (i.e. 35.2 times faster than in a pure water system) at the significant poin… Show more

“…Several types of liquid-phase plasma, e.g., streamer, spark, arc, and glow discharge plasmas, and their various formation methods have been reported11121314. We have already demonstrated a spark–glow transition plasma in aqueous solution and have used it to fabricate gold nanoparticles in the absence of a reducing agent15161718192021222324. This plasma is named solution plasma.…”

“…The discharging current increased to a maximum value of ∼6 A and the frequency of current oscillations was 3.7 MHz. These current waveforms and oscillation phenomena in Figure (a) are generally observed in the SP generation using the conventional circuit and pin‐to‐pin discharge device …”

“…The conventional circuit consists of a bipolar pulsed power supply and pin‐to‐pin discharge device, as shown in Figure (a) and Supplementary Information Figure S1 . The modified circuit consists of a low‐pass filter part, denoted as the oscillation filter part, with a parallel capacitor of 2 nF and a resistor of 50 Ω and discharge device part with the addition of a resistor of 100 Ω in series, as shown in Figure (b).…”

“…The H and OH radicals form atomic H, H 2 and H 2 O 2 in aqueous solutions and have different reducing abilities depending on the pH value of the solution. 16,26 Among these products, hydrated electrons have the strongest reducing ability to reduce most of the metal ions in the solution. Due to the extremely short lifetime of these PLI products (10 À9 s to 10 À6 s), 27 the plasma-induced chemical reaction can be terminated immediately without leaving reductant residuals upon removal of the plasma.…”
