Accelerated weathering performance of wood‐plastic composites reinforced with carbon and glass fibre‐woven fabrics

Abstract: Wood-plastic composites (WPCs) are new generation materials widely used in outdoor conditions; however, the appearance and mechanical properties of WPCs change with exposure to weather. In this study, high-density polyethylene-based flat-pressed WPCs are reinforced with carbon and glass fibre-woven fabrics for uses where high mechanical properties are needed in outdoor conditions. For this purpose, WPCs are exposed to accelerated weathering conditions to determine the effect of weathering with and without rein… Show more

“…Biobased plastic composites formed by blending biomass resources with thermoplastics have attracted attention for applications in buildings, decoration, automotive interiors, and decking ( Bengtsson et al, 2007 ; Kuo et al, 2009 ; Durmaz et al, 2021 ; Guo et al, 2021 ) because of their broadly-distributed resources, low cost, lightweight, high toughness, sound insulation, and shock absorption properties ( Rowell, 2007 ; Kuo et al, 2009 ; Ren et al, 2020 ; Vedat and Fatih, 2020 ). Bamboo fiber (BF) is an important biomass resource, with rapid renewability, wide availability, biodegradability, and outstanding mechanical properties ( Yu et al, 2014 ).…”

“…2,3 Then, the scission reactions occur, resulting in a shortage of polymer chains, which induces crack formation. 4,5 Therefore, conserved wood fibers with encapsulation become visible and are exposed to UV lights and humidity. Finally, this phenomenon occurs recurrently, depleting the materials' service life and causing economic losses.…”

“…Photochemical reactions induce the degradation of lignin and photooxidation of cellulose and hemicelluloses. This also leads to discoloration of wood and influence negatively on the wood's physical and mechanical properties (Temiz et al 2007, Matuana et al 2011, Durmaz et al 2022.…”
