Accelerating Benders decomposition for short-term hydropower maintenance scheduling

Abstract: Maintenance of power generators is essential for reliable and efficient electricity production. Because generators under maintenance are typically inactive, optimal planning of maintenance activities must consider the impact of maintenance outages on the system operation. However, in hydropower systems finding a minimum cost maintenance schedule is a challenging optimization problem due to the uncertainty of the water inflows and the nonlinearity of the hydroelectricity production.

“…At each time period, we identify the scenario with the highest demand and add valid inequalities in the space of commitment variables to ensure the feasibility of constraints ( 1h) and ( 1j). (iii) We derive the so-called combinatorial cuts that exclude the current infeasible solution of the master problem by forcing a change of value in at least one commitment variable; see Codato and Fischetti (2006) and Rodríguez et al (2021) for details about these cuts. (iv) Finally, we strengthen the logarithmic start-up cost constraints (1b) by reducing the coefficient of variables…”

“…The ISO manages the planning process of the maintenance considering the costs of maintenance actions for the generation units and the power system reliability. Maintenance scheduling is usually performed in a multi-time-scale manner and can consequently be categorized into long-term scheduling [8][9][10][11], mid-term scheduling [12,13], and shortterm scheduling [14,15]. The current paper focuses on the design of a long-term maintenance scheduling framework.…”
