Acceptability of a microfinance‐based empowerment intervention for transgender and cisgender women sex workers in Greater Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Abstract: Introduction: Cisgender and transgender woman sex workers (CWSWs and TWSWs, respectively) are key populations in Malaysia with higher HIV-prevalence than that of the general population. Given the impact economic instability can have on HIV transmission in these populations, novel HIV prevention interventions that reduce poverty may reduce HIV incidence and improve linkage and retention to care for those already living with HIV. We examine the feasibility of a microfinance-based HIV prevention intervention amon… Show more

“…11 Furthermore, innovative interventions to reduce HIV risk among TW sex workers in Malaysia have been explored previously, including the feasibility of microfinance-based interventions. 39 Introduction of novel strategies, including peer-based HIV testing, at-home HIV testing, and integration of HIV testing into routine care, may improve overall uptake and frequency of HIV testing for TW in Malaysia. Such strategies are consistent with the Malaysia Ministry of Health's mission to decentralize HIV testing from clinic-to community-based settings.…”

“…Qualitative studies in specific populations show that microfinance programs are acceptable to recipients. 33 The use of "payday loans," small and high-interest loans that should be paid off quickly, was common in Canada before the pandemic. 34,35 In other countries, small loans are offered by nongovernmental organizations with government support, and such a model could work in Canada.…”

“…In such cases, support (not necessarily monetary) from the outside (NGOs, government agencies) has been important for women's groups to make claims and be heard (Arora-Jonsson 2013, Schroeder 1999, Sundar 1998. Similarly, support for collectives may also need to be combined with individualised support, as shown by microfinance interventions such as an HIV-prevention measure for transgender and cisgender 6 women using drugs (Lall et al 2017). It is clear that no one solution fits all contexts.…”
