Abstract: To describe the acceptability of male circumcision (MC) and explore potential factors associated with MC acceptability among male rural-to-urban migrants in western China, a cross-sectional survey of MC acceptability was conducted with 1,904 subjects in three western provinces with high HIV prevalence (Guangxi, Chongqing, and Xinjiang) in China between June 2009 and November 2009. “…The study is the first one to investigate MC’s acceptability and related factors among medical college students in China. Our investigation showed a higher overall MC acceptance rate (55.2%) among this population, compared to other populations in China, such as 44.6% among the general population [ 25 ], 45.2% among the drug abusing population[ 26 ], 37.3% among the male rural-to-urban migrants [ 27 ], and 40.6% among young people of Yi nationality in Sichuan province[ 28 ]. However, the rate was still lower than the reported rates in other countries, such as 65% in sub-Saharan Africa [ 21 ] and 87.7% among the population of men who have sex with men (MSM) in the USA [ 22 ].…”

“…First, the participants were recruited not by probability sampling, nor by respondent-driven sampling methods [ 58 ]. However, studies using a similar study design are common [ 20 22 ]. Second, we did not collect information from participants who refused to participate in the study.…”

“…Five reported prevalence of acceptability of VMMC, ranging from 37.3% to 63.8%. Associated factors of acceptability of VMMC included education level [ 20 ], HIV/STD prevention service utilization [ 23 ], overly long foreskin [ 20 , 22 ], having had sex with NRP or FSW [ 20 , 23 , 24 ], and having a male circumcised friend [ 20 , 21 ]. Cognitive facilitating factors included beliefs that VMMC could improve genital hygiene [ 23 ], reduce risk of HIV/STD infection [ 22 , 23 ], improve sexual pleasure, increase female partners’ sexual pleasure [ 23 – 25 ], and lower perceived chance of HIV infection in the future [ 23 , 24 ].…”

“…In this study, among MUS participants, the overall acceptance rate of MC was 70.9%, which is much higher than that (55.2%) in the same region and population in 2015 [26]. This MC acceptance rate is also higher than those reported among black Africans in South Africa (45.7%), the Rakai population in Uganda (27%), young black MSM in the US (50%), and male ruralto-urban migrants in western China (37.3%) [29][30][31][32][33]. Our study shows that people who were not registered residents of Guangxi, had a medicine background, and had an MC surgery were more likely to accept MC.…”
