Accessible Engineering Drawings for Visually Impaired Machine Operators

Abstract: An engineering drawing provides manufacturing information to a machine operator. An operator plans and executes machining operations based on this information. A visually impaired (VI) operator does not have direct access to the drawings. Drawing information is provided to them verbally or by using sample parts. Both methods have limitations that affect the quality of output. Use of engineering drawings is a standard practice for every industry; this hampers employment of a VI operator. Accessible engineering … Show more

“…It is the writing system for the blind anywhere in the world and is used to send and obtain information [64]. Ramteke et al converts information from CAD files into voice or braille to make engineering drawings accessible to visually impaired operators [65]. This shows an application, in which the impairment can be compensated with the appropriate assistance system to include the worker with a disability in the daily work in production.…”

“…When entering each data is adapted to M2H (Machine-to-Human) communication in a form acceptable depending on the user's degree of disability. M2H communication also enables the adaptation of the information according to the Braille line [15]. All data required for Beacon transmitters (Beacon transmitters base) is stored in the database.…”
