Accessory liver lobe attached to the gallbladder wall preoperatively detected by ultrasonography: A case report

Abstract: HighlightsAn accessory liver lobe is a rare anomaly of the liver. An accessory liver lobe is usually asymptomatic and incidentally detected during surgery or autopsy in most cases. An accessory liver lobe should be resected in order to prevent complications and malignant transformation.Ultrasonography is useful in case of accessory liver lobe for preoperative diagnosis.

“…Regarding treatment, given the scarcity of cases in the literature, it is difficult to establish a management protocol and hence treatment should be individualized in each case. Most authors recommend surgical resection to prevent complications, such as hepatic ischaemia caused by pedicle torsion or a malignant degeneration [1,5,6]. Although most cases reported in the literature were treated via the thoracic route, in our case we opted for a laparoscopic approach.…”

“…[3,5,6]. However, thanks to radiological advances, more and more cases are being diagnosed preoperatively [1,2]. Supradiaphragmatic liver tissue can mimic any space-occupying lesion found at this site, such as tumors, bronchopulmonary sequestration, or hydatid cysts [5,6,8].…”

“…In most cases, an ALL will be an accidental finding during some form of radiological imaging or during abdomnial surgery. Rare cases of liver function impairment, abdominal pain, bleeding, obstruction of the portal vein or malignancy have been reported [ 3 , 4 , 7 , 16 ]. If patients are found to be asymptomatic and without underlying conditions, such as hepatic disease, liver cirrhosis or malignancy, surgical treatment should not be obligatory.…”

“…Ectopic liver tissue is most commonly found in the gallbladder. In one reported case, the ectopic liver tissue attached to the gallbladder was detected during cholecystectomy for cholelithiasis and resected [ 9 ]. Other common sites include the greater omentum, adrenal gland, round ligament of the liver, and spleen, that is, regions around the liver [ 7 , 8 ].…”
