Accidental Dermal and Inhalation Exposure with Fipronil—A Case Report

Abstract: Further investigations should be carried on to evaluate the risk of fipronil in humans. The benzodiazepines are drugs of choice during seizures, B1 agonists and steroids may be useful during severe inhalation exposure.

“…In the first instance, fipronil does not represent a severe toxic agent to mammals; however, any species may be affected if the dose is greater than that recommended by the manufacturers. According to reports in the literature, there are cases of poisoning due to accidental exposure or incorrect use of the compound (Chodorowski and Anand, 2004;Lee et al, 2010). A case of acute poisoning after ingestion of a high fipronil dose caused human death (Mohamed et al, 2004).…”

“…Human cases included a 77-year-old woman who ingested ant bait containing 0.01% fipronil (Ͻ0.1 mg), and a 50-year-old man that complained of short-lived, non-specific, symptoms after being exposed to a dilute spray of fipronil. 45,46) There are no human fatalities reported as a result of fipronil exposure.…”

“…As fipronil has been recently introduced, there are relatively few data concerning its risk to human health (Tingle et al, 2003). Recently, a case report was published describing fipronil-induced symptoms (Chodorowski and Anand, 2004) in a patient, who complained of headache, nausea, vertigo and weakness. This report indicates that second generation insecticides may also have severe effects on humans in the case of long lasting contamination.…”
