Acciones claves para la prevención y rehabilitación del trastorno por uso de sustancias en anestesia

Abstract

Introduction:Psychoactive or psychotropic substance use disorder (SUD) is a disease characterized by recurrent use of psychoactive substances and constitutes a major risk to the health and lives of anesthesiologists. Natural history: SUD is an elaborate and devastating progressive disease which becomes chronic and recidivant. Exposure to highly addictive substances predisposes the anesthesiologist to move quickly through dependence and addiction, endanger his professional performance and judgment, and progressively deteriorate his health, his life and the other´s lives. Actions: It is recommendable to create a committee in institutions, societies and anesthesiology groups in general to achieve an impact on development of psychoactive substance use disorder and prevent its consequences; It will focus on 3 goals: prevention, early diagnosis and treatment, through concrete actions that will be development in this article and which have led to creation successful programs around the world to save lives. Conclusions: Psychoactive substance use disorder is a serious illness that should be recognized as such, the current approach to SUD as a behavioral deviation and approached with punitive and exclusionary behavior delays diagnosis and treatment and result on death or permanent disability of a highly qualified specialist. Adopting prevention, diagnosis and treatment measures is cost-effective for the healthcare system as a whole.
