Acculturation and adjustment of migrants reporting trauma: The contextual effects of perceived ethnic density

Abstract: Little is known about the relation between acculturation and socioecological contexts of migrants with a personal trauma history living in the community. This study represents an extension of our previous work and aimed to unpack the perceived neighborhood ethnic density (ED) effect and examine the moderating role of ED on the acculturation–adjustment relation in a community sample of migrants with trauma (N = 99) from developing countries residing in Montreal, Canada. ED was protective against general psychol… Show more

“…A similar argument can be derived from the general materialist assumption of sociological classics such as Marx (1977/1859) and Weber (1978/1921): Structural conditions shape the lives of individuals and also their thoughts and perceptions—and, as Weber emphasizes in particular—there is also a feedback of individual thoughts and behavior towards the structural conditions. More recently, Oishi and Graham (2010) have argued the importance of integrating social ecological perspectives in psychology, and researchers have been increasingly focusing on the interaction between contextual and psychological process variables (e.g., Jurcik et al, 2014, 2019). Hence, structural conditions may moderate or mediate certain behaviors at individual and local levels.…”

“…Such policies and interventions should also take into account that SS from the community, neighbours, and native friends facilitates the integration of migrant groups in the host country and buffers the negative effects of stressful events (e.g., discrimination) on SWL (Jurcik et al, 2019; Neto, 1995, 2001). Interventions should encourage positive interactions between migrants and native groups, which could reduce the vulnerability of the migrant collective as well as reduce discrimination and rejection (Basabe, Páez, Aierdi, & Jiménez‐Aristizabal, 2009).…”

“…Although French is the official language of Quebec, Montreal is a highly bilingual city and immigrants often learn to adapt to both Francophone and Anglophone ethnolinguistic groups (see Yakobov, Jurcik, Solopieieva-Jurcikova, & Ryder, 2019). More details about various recruitment strategies used in obtaining this sample can be found in Jurcik et al ( , 2019 ). In contrast, the Italian sample comprised 266 people (158 males, M age = 35.78, SD age = 11.87), most of whom were born in Morocco (73%).…”

“…For example, in places where immigrants are highly discriminated against, they might have few opportunities to "participate" and their participation may therefore be unrelated to their preferences or to what they enjoy. Finally, since the VIA has generally been studied in community and student contexts, there may also be a benefit to exploring the factor structure and clinical utility of the VIA in increasingly culturally diverse patient populations (Jurcik et al, 2019). Unfortunately, research to date in this area has been sparse.…”
