Accumulation of Carotenoids and Metabolic Profiling in Different Cultivars of Tagetes Flowers

Abstract: Species of Tagetes, which belong to the family Asteraceae show different characteristics including, bloom size, shape, and color; plant size; and leaf shape. In this study, we determined the differences in primary metabolites and carotenoid yields among six cultivars from two Tagetes species, T. erecta and T. patula. In total, we detected seven carotenoids in the examined cultivars: violaxanthin, lutein, zeaxanthin, α-carotene, β-carotene, 9-cis-β-carotene, and 13-cis-β-carotene. In all the cultivars, lutein w… Show more

“…Carotenoids are natural pigments which belong to the second group of antioxidants. They are involved in indispensable roles in photoprotection, stress and photosynthesis, in addition to acting as precursors of vitamin A [47],[48]. Some carotenoids compounds have been reported to prevent humans from developing certain cancers and cardiovascular diseases.…”

“…A wide range of medicinal plants with ACE inhibitory activities have been reported in the past ( Barbosa-Filho et al, 2006 ), and this activity was attributed to the synergistic action of secondary metabolites viz. alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, proanthocyanidins, fatty acids, and terpenoids ( Loizzo et al, 2007 , Park et al, 2017 ). The ACE inhibitory activities of extracts might be because of flavonoid, alkaloid, and tannin contents, possibly through sequestration of enzyme metal co-factor, protein precipitation or through other mechanisms.…”

“…This type of analysis has been used previously to explore the possibility of using carotenoid content of samples to discriminate between groups of interest (Goodner, Rouseff & Hofsommer, 2001;Kim et al, 2010;Park et al, 2017). The variables for the MDA were the measured proportions of each of the 11 carotenoids.…”

“…Multivariate discriminate analysis (MDA) was used to identify a correlation between the visually assigned gonad colour groups (light‐, medium‐ and dark‐coloured gonads) and the measured carotenoid content. This type of analysis has been used previously to explore the possibility of using carotenoid content of samples to discriminate between groups of interest (Goodner, Rouseff & Hofsommer, ; Kim et al., ; Park et al., ). The variables for the MDA were the measured proportions of each of the 11 carotenoids.…”
