“…The measured concentrations of heavy metals, with the exceptions of Cr and Ni, did not exceed background levels for the Arctic (Bargagli and Mikhailova 2002). The low levels of most of the elements in spite of the proximity to the Polish Polar Station Hornsund (c. 10 km to the north of the study area) suggest that its influence on the environment is only local, as noted by Grodzińska and Godzik (1991) who analysed heavy metals and sulphur contents in mosses in the vicinity of this station.…”

“…Our data, sup− ported by the results of Jóźwik (2000), suggest that comparison of C. delisei and F. nivalis in terms of heavy metal accumulation has to be carried out with caution. There can be various reasons for the different behaviour of F. nivalis in com− parison to C. delisei and C. uncialis, such as anatomical features, specifically the composition of the cortex: gelatinized hyphae present in the Flavocetraria cortex may act as a mechanical barrier for big particles and prevent them from entering the interior of the thallus; such hyphae are absent in the cortex of Cetraria, Cetrariella and Cladonia (Bargagli and Mikhailova 2002;Smith et al 2009). An− other factor may involve differences in the binding mechanisms of different metals in the studied species (Bargagli and Mikhailova 2002).…”

“…Both particle trapping and ion uptake from solution depend on morphological features (branching, wrinkling, roughness) and anatomical features (size of pores, density of hyphae in the medulla) (Bargagli and Mikhailova, 2002). Since comparison of element uptake by morphologically similar species of Parmelia did not reveal any clear trend (Bargagli et al, 1987).…”

“…Hundreds of studies carried out over the last 40 years confirmed that lichens were among the most reliable accumulators of inorganic contaminants (Bargagli and Mikhailova, 2002;Wolterbeek et al, 2003). Lichens could accumulate and retain many heavy metals in quantities that vastly exceed their physiological requirements and tolerate these high concentrations by binding metals extracellularly and intracellularly (Bačkor and Loppi, 2009).…”

“…With the transplant technique, healthy lichen thalli are taken from a relatively clean site, transplanted to the study site(s) and their response recorded (Bargagli and Mikhailova 2002). At polluted sites lichens will adapt their metabolism according to the new environment and accumulate airborne elements to levels far above their metabolic requirements (Garty 1993).…”
