Disease caused by Tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV) brings serious production losses of cultivated tomato worldwide. In our previous study, two novel amino acid derivatives exerted satisfactory antiviral activities against TYLCV. In this study, the variation of TYLCV, the transcriptional expression level of Ty-1 and the enzyme activities of POD and PPO in tomato were monitored after treatment with two amino acid derivatives to illustrate the antiviral mechanism. The results showed the symptom severity caused by TYLCV was reduced significantly by two compounds and was associated with the inhibition of viral DNA level at the early stage. Among three levels of concentration, the highest inhibition rate of CNBF-His was 40.66% at 1000 mg/L, for CNBF-Asn, the highest inhibition rate was 36.26% at 2000 mg/L 30 days post-inoculation. Two compounds could also enhance the activities of PPO and POD and the transcriptional expression level of Ty-1 which correlates with plant resistance in tomato. In the field test, two compounds increased the yields of tomato and the maximum increase of yield was 37.66%. This is the first report of novel amino acid derivatives inducing resistance in tomato plant against TYLCV. It is suggested that amino acid derivatives have the potential to be an effective approach against TYLCV in tomato plant.

This review presents and discusses the merits of the methodologies available for implementing integrated pest management (IPM) of B. tabaci populations: namely, chemical control with selective insecticides, biological control, crop plant resistance and physical/mechanical methods. Insecticides, by their poisonous nature, are often harmful to natural enemies and therefore, disruptive to overall pest management. However, the more modern materials that are effective for B. tabaci control are relatively specific to the target pests, and therefore are less harmful to natural enemies and the environment; consequently, they are also more suitable for integrative combination with other methods. Natural enemies, by themselves, usually do not form a suitable solution of B. tabaci-caused problems. However, their occurrence and use greatly reduces the pest's populations. Since viral plant diseases transmitted by B. tabaci are not curable, the principal tactics for their management should be based on prevention of transmission by physical-mechanical methods and/or on utilization of host-plant resistance. The correct implementation of natural enemies will help to reduce whitefly numbers, which can then be more readily managed using cultural and, only if necessary, chemical countermeasures.

A determinação da gama de hospedeiros de begomovírus isolados de tomateiro (Lycopersicon esculentum) é de elevada importância nos estudos conduzidos com esses patógenos, uma vez que contribui para o entendimento da larga disseminação dos vírus em condições de campo e oferece subsídios para o estudo da variabilidade genética de espécies e estirpes identificadas em diversas regiões do país. Visando a determinação e a comparação da gama de hospedeiros de dois isolados de begomovírus de tomateiro obtidos de lavouras da região de Anápolis-GO (GO-ANPL) e do Distrito Federal (DF-BR2) inocularam-se 31 espécies vegetais pertencentes a oito famílias botânicas, sob duas modalidades de inoculação: mecânica e com a mosca branca, Bemisia tabaci biótipo B. Constatouse que o GO-ANPL e o DF-BR2 infetaram exclusivamente plantas da família Solanaceae como Datura stramonium, Nicandra physalodes e Nicotiana benthamiana. Para o GO-ANPL, o número de espécies vegetais infetadas com o emprego do inseto vetor foi superior ao obtido pela inoculação mecânica, diferindo dos resultados obtidos para o DF-BR2 em que as plantas hospedeiras foram igualmente infetadas em ambos os métodos de inoculação. A comparação entre as hospedeiras dos dois isolados e destes com as de outros begomovírus de tomateiro da região Nordeste revelaram que há variação tanto nas espécies hospedeiras como na sintomatologia exibida pelas plantas infetadas. ABSTRACT Plant species hosts of begomovirus obtained from tomato in Goiás and Federal District of BrazilDetermination of the begomovirus host range determination in tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) is an important feature in unveiling the genetic variability of species and strains of the virus and how it spreads under field conditions. In order to determine the host range of two begomoviruses isolated from tomato, denoted GO-ANPL and DF-BR2, 31 plant species of eight botanical families were tested via mechanical and vector inoculation. Both isolates only infected plants of the family Solanaceae as Datura stramonium, Nicandra physalodes e Nicotiana benthamiana. The GO-ANPL isolate infected a higher number of plants when they were inoculated by the insect vector. Results were distinct from those obtained with the DF-BR2 isolate, where both inoculation methods were equally effective. Comparison between these two isolates with other begomoviruses reported in Northeast Brazil revealed different patterns in host range and symptomss. Virus infection was confirmed by dot blot hybridization using specific molecular probes to begomovirus isolates.
