Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) represents a major global health threat, as well as a major hazard to sustainable economic development and national security. It remains, therefore, vital that current research aligns to policy development and implementation to alleviate a potential crisis. One must consider, for example, whether drivers of antibiotic resistance can be controlled in the future, or have they already accumulated in the past, whether from antibiotics and/or other pollutants? Unfortunately, industrial heritage and its pollution impact on the prevalence of environmental AMR have largely been ignored. Focussing on industrialised estuaries, we demonstrate that anthropogenic pollution inputs in addition to the natural diurnal environmental conditions can sufficiently create stressful conditions to the microbiome and thus promote selective pressures to shift the resistome (i.e., collection of resistance traits in the microbiological community). Unfortunately, the bacteria's survival mechanisms, via co-selective pressures, can affect their susceptibility to antibiotics. This review highlights the complexity of estuarine environments, using two key contaminant groups (metals/toxic elements and polyaromatic hydrocarbons), through which a variety of possible chemical and biological pollutant stressors can promote the emergence and dissemination of antimicrobial resistance. We find compelling divers to call on more focused research on historically disrupted ecosystems, in propagating AMR in the real world.

To identify the distribution of heavy metals in sewer sediments and assess their potential harmfulness to the environment and human health, the occurrence of Pb, Zn, Cu, and Cd in the sewer sediment of six functional areas and two streets in an inner-city suburb of Beijing, China, was investigated by using a sequential extraction procedure. Results show that the concentrations of Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb vary between 50 and 175, between 80 and 180, between 0.75 and 2.5, and between 20 and 110 mg/kg, respectively, and Fe-Mn oxide fraction is significant for all metals in sampling areas. Pollution assessment shows that 1-2% of Cu at Chegongzhuang Street and 1-3% of Zn at Fuwai Street in the exchangeable fractions are of low risk. 10-25% of Cd at six functional areas indicates medium risk. 40-60% of Pb at Fuwai Street existing in the exchangeable fractions is of high to very high risk. The sum of these metals associated with exchangeable, carbonate bound, and Fe-Mn oxide fractions is quite high; however, these three fractions represent the proportion of heavy metals that can be remobilized by changes in environmental conditions.

The Bizerte Lagoon (Tunisia) functions as a sedimentation environment characterized by receiving allochthonous sediments mainly transported by the Ben Hassine, Rharek and Guenich streams, as well as marine sediments from the Mediterranean Sea. It is subjected to significant environmental changes due to the natural and anthropic influences altering the natural patterns of circulation, extraction and/or deposition of mineralogical materials. The aim of this investigation is to analyze the sediments supply and early diagenetic processes in Bizerte Lagoon. The physicochemical parameter of the sediment pore water, as well as their texture, mineralogical composition (X-Ray diffraction technique -XRD), magnetic susceptibility and their geochemical composition (namely lithogenic and biogenic chemical elements analyzed by ICP-MS) were analyzed in 10 sampling stations.The water temperature with an average of 15.2°C was stable in the study area. The sediments were generally characterized by fine granulometry, mainly mud and sandy mud, poorly to very poorly sorted, and constituted by two or more granulometric particle modes. The mineralogical results revealed the presence of phyllosilicates, quartz, pyrite, calcite, anatase and K-feldspar, and other minerals in smaller proportions. The fine sediment and high phyllosilicates and Al contents indicate the presence of weak currents in most part of the studied area. The results of sorting, skewness and kurtosis suggest that the currents are more active in the northern region of the lagoon, near the channel of communication with the Mediterranean Sea. They also evidence a coarser particle contribution of the Ben Hassine stream to the lagoon. The other streams seem to introduce mostly fine-grained sediments in the lagoon. The industrial activity is also an important factor, since it results in the accumulation of high levels of some metals, such as Fe. Metals are mostly retained in the sediment in areas with active biogeochemical activity due to high organic matter accumulation. Mineralogical and geochemical patterns indicate contributions from different rocks sources, diverse processes of transport and deposition of sediments and varied processes of production of autochthonous materials.
