Accuracy of 16/18G core needle biopsy for ultrasound-visible breast lesions

Abstract: BackgroundTo assess the accuracy of ultrasound-guided 16G or 18G core needle biopsy (CNB) for ultrasound-visible breast lesions, and to analyze the effects of lesion features.MethodsBetween July 2005 and July 2012, 4,453 ultrasound-detected breast lesions underwent ultrasound-guided CNB and were retrospectively reviewed. Surgical excision was performed for 955 lesions (566 with 16G CNB and 389 with 18G CNB) which constitute the basis of the study. Histological findings were compared between the ultrasound-guid… Show more

“…According to lesion consistency, we distinguished “mass” and “non‐mass” lesions because, even if “non‐mass” lesions are not included in the BI‐RADS US lexicon, they may be more histologically heterogeneous and CNB may be less accurate . An US‐visible “mass lesion” is a space‐occupying lesion, seen on multiple different US images, while a “non‐mass lesion” is a hypoechoic area with an indistinct margin .…”

“…However, none of these investigations were performed under US guidance. Although later studies analyzed the performance of 14-gauge US-guided CNB versus a smaller needle size [32,33], no statement was given concerning the minimum number of specimens to achieve acceptable diagnostic accuracy and quality.…”

“…Other studies also analyzed the effects of 14-gauge and 16-gauge CNB [19,[31][32][33][34][35]. However, no information is available about the required number of specimens for sufficient diagnostic accuracy and quality.…”
