Accuracy of Continuous Jugular Bulb Venous Oximetry During Cardiopulmonary Bypass

Abstract: We evaluated the accuracy of fiberoptic catheter oximetry in the jugular bulb during conditions of normothermia, hemodilution, and hypothermia in 11 patients who underwent cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). An oximetry catheter was inserted into the right jugular bulb under general anesthesia, calibrated by the in vitro (n = 7) or in vivo (n = 4) mode. Jugular bulb oxygen saturation (SjO2) with the catheter oximeter was compared with a concurrent laboratory CO-oximeter value from a blood sample… Show more

“…Nakajima et al [40] found difficulty in maintaining adequate light intensity from the fibreoptic catheter during CPB in some of the patients studied: patients over the age of 70 years, female patients and those who weighed , 50 kg. However, these patient characteristics did not account for all the difficulties encountered with the fibreoptic catheter in the study by Trubiano et al [41] ( Table 1).…”
