“…A recent study demonstrated good agreement between pinhole acuity and BCVA and recommended it as a test for visual impairment not correctable with spectacles. This surrogacy ought to be considered when comparing results with studies where subjectively measured BCVA is reported 50. Furthermore, clarification is needed on whether reported amblyopia prevalence findings include figures for those previously treated for amblyopia 29.…”

“…Surveys wishing to report eREC must routinely measure (1) uncorrected VA (UCVA) , (2) corrected VA (CVA) for those wearing correction and (3) when either UCVA or CVA <6/12 pinhole VA (PinVA) or best‐corrected VA (BCVA) when refraction is done. Pinhole VA tends to be more commonly reported as conducting refraction in surveys has extensive resource implications, while pinhole screening has been shown to be effective at identifying refractive error in general populations . These VA measurements will enable estimates of no need, met need, under‐met need and unmet need ( Figure ).…”

“…As in the clinical practice, pinhole acts as the time-saver and method of choice over the standard refraction, which is frequently time-consuming. A recent study in urban Indian hospital found a similar visual acuity obtained from both pinhole and best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) among adults above 50 years old (Kumar et al, 2019). Currently, there is no other mobile app which utilizes the pinhole test for vision screening within their algorithm beside ours.…”
