Accuracy of Skeletal Age Assessment in Children From Birth to 6 Years of Age With the Ultrasonographic Version of the Greulich‐Pyle Atlas

Abstract: The ultrasonographic version of the Greulich-Pyle atlas can be used to estimate bone age even in ultrasonography departments. This method is highly correlated and a valid alternative to plain radiography for bone age estimation. This enables estimation of skeletal age in ultrasonography departments easily without exposing the patient to radiation.

“…Ultrasonography showed a good correlation with the Greulich and Pyle method in the first 6 years of life, but unfortunately there has been no study with older children and young adults [17]. When focusing only on the distal epiphyses of the radius and ulna, ultrasonography and radiography gave similar correlations between bone and chronological age [18].…”

“…Only few studies have mentioned sonography as an image-guided alternative to examine bone age [3,6,7,24,36]. Wagner et al [36] described a high correlation between sonographic and radiological Risser Grade evaluation.…”

“…The sonography-based techniques such as the ultrasonographic version of the Greulich and Pyle atlas demonstrated by Bilgili [3] are available, but they are time consuming (average time; 3 min, 45 s) and may not be useful in routine. Bilgili compared hand and wrist plain radiographs and compared the findings with sonographic evaluation.…”

“…Given the high correlation of skeletal age with DEXA-or sonography-based measurements of bone mass/quality, some studies have proposed these techniques as a possible alternative to conventional radiographic evaluation of skeletal age obtained by observing the morphological changes of the growing skeleton [28][29][30].…”
